RESPONSE 10-28: Prison Farms

  • The following is the response from OCA to Resolution 10-28, carried at the 2010 OCA Annual General Meeting.

In response to this resolution, OCA wrote a letter to Minister of Public Saftey, The Honourable Vic Toews. The letter stated that our association has been asked to support the prison farms across Canada, and more specifically, in Kingston, Ontario. It read that our biggest concern is the future status of the abattoir that is on the site of the prison, Wallace Beef Inc.  OCA stated that it is our understanding that this abattoir will not be closed or forced to move when the prison farms are closed.  We thanked Minister Toews for making this decision, as the plant processes cattle from several local beef farmers and markets the beef locally.

We also asked that he continue to support the long-term viability of this abattoir by maintaining the current working agreement between the prison and Wallace Beef Inc.
