The
following is the response from OCA to Resolutions 09-01,
carried at the 2009 OCA Annual General Meeting.
Both the Simcoe County resolution and
the sub resolution from Perth County have since been discussed by the
OCA Board of Directors. The Board feels that age verification should be
mandatory nationally, and the lobby for this should be driven by the
Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA). A letter that
was sent to Brad Wildeman, President of the CCA, stating OCA’s position.
That letter is below...
June 22, 2009
The Ontario Cattlemen’s Association has been a proponent of mandatory
age verification since our Board endorsed a resolution from our Annual
meeting in February, 2006.
Alberta’s recent position to mandate age verification within their own
province has been a driver for neighbouring provinces to adopt this
practice. Provincial enforcement of age verification raises several
concerns, given the movement of cattle within Canada.
Beyond this obvious situation, there are a variety of issues that work
against the process and integrity of age verification. These include
lost tags, transaction errors, unreadable tags, and dial-up access.
With these in mind, the following resolution has been passed by the OCA
Board of Directors at our June 15 Board meeting:
THAT CCA work with CCIA in addressing any
identified problems with the process or integrity of age verification,
and at the same time, actively lobby for mandatory age verification
nationally.
We would also like this resolution sent to
the CCA Animal Health Committee at the CCA semi annual meeting.
This issue was brought to the CCA
Semi-Annual and the resolution was turned down
