Representatives from Peterborough County
met with the OCA Board of Directors on April 27th, 2009 to
discuss their proposal for a risk management program, and the need for
grassroots consultations. After much discussion, the Board of Directors
agreed that they will not support the Peterborough proposal in its
entirety and expressed concern about some of its components such as risk
of countervail, overall cost, and lack of incentives for herd
improvement. Public meetings across Ontario will not be held, however,
ideas to include in a risk management program will be discussed at the
regional meetings in the fall. Advisory Councillors and Presidents are
urged to solicit ideas from their counties and bring them to the
regional meetings.
In addition, OCA continues to lobby the
provincial government for $20M for a Corn-Fed Beef Ledger Account Pilot
Program. The proposed ledger account will provide long-term stability
and confidence to feed cattle in Ontario. If successful, it could be
expanded to all sectors in the beef industry. |
