CCA Reacts to USDA Announcement of Possible Canadian
Connection
December 27 - While emphasizing that the information about a possible Canadian
origin for the BSE cow diagnosed in Washington State is preliminary and still in
need of verification, the Canadian Cattlemen's Association (CCA) said today it
will work closely with both Canadian and U.S. investigators to get to the
bottom of the issue.
As indicated in a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) news
conference held this morning, there are discrepancies between the cow's
records in the U.S. and those of the herd in question that was exported from
Canada to the U.S. in 2001. Canadian records indicate the animal in
question, if part of that export, was 6.5 years old and not 4.5 years old as
the U.S. records indicated. If the cow is indeed the same cow that was
exported from Canada, it would have been born prior to Canada's ban on
ruminant meat and bone meal was put in place.
The CCA will continue to work to get the U.S. border re-opened to Canadian
beef and cattle exports based on sound scientific principles.
